The 40% problem
Google’s informational-query click-through rate has dropped roughly 40% since late 2023. Not because the queries stopped — they shifted. A chunk of buyer research moved into conversational AI: ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and, inside Google itself, AI Overviews.
If your buyer types “best open-source CRM for startups” into ChatGPT and your name isn’t in the answer, you’re absent from that shortlist. Not ranked 4th. Absent. There’s no second page.
Why legacy SEO tools miss this
The big SEO suites were built for a world where a buyer sees ten blue links and clicks one. They measure rankings and backlinks because rankings and backlinks predicted clicks.
In an LLM answer, there is no ranking. There’s a single generated paragraph that may or may not mention your brand. The thing that decides whether you’re mentioned isn’t keyword density or PageRank — it’s the model’s internal representation of your entity, the structured data you’ve published, the corpus your brand appears in, and the specific question asked.
Rank tracking tells you nothing about any of those. That’s not a tooling bug. It’s a category bug.
What AEO actually requires
There are four signals that matter, on different cadences:
- Citation probing. You have to actually ask the models buyer-intent questions and parse the answers for your domain. Weekly, across every major engine, with enough prompts to be statistically meaningful.
- Structured data + technical hygiene. LLMs lean heavily on JSON-LD, clean heading hierarchy, FAQ schema, and entity relationships. Sites without these get skipped.
- Content that answers cleanly. Not thought-leadership fluff. Direct, scannable answers to the specific questions buyers ask. Comparison tables. FAQ sections. Named alternatives.
- Attribution against movement. Every action you take — publish an article, install a schema, post a Reddit comment — needs to be scored against citation movement in the following weeks. Otherwise you’re just shipping.
Why SyncSEO
SyncSEO is the only system we know of that runs all four loops continuously, in one product, for one credit-based bill. The citation probe, the schema audit, the article generator, the placement drafter, the impact scorer — one loop, one dashboard.
You don’t need to stitch together four tools. You don’t need a prompt engineer on staff. The agent runs on the cadence you configure; your team approves the drafts; the system measures what worked.
If you’re starting to suspect your buyers are researching somewhere you can’t see, that suspicion is correct. The free plan exists specifically so you can test it on your own domain before you believe us.
